A question frequently asked: Why use a professional editor? The answer in short is: a
mainstream publishing house will receive thousands of manuscripts each year. Some of my
clients have found (the hard way) that if the manuscript isn't in its best possible condition the
publishing house will not give it a second glance--let alone read through it for the quality of
the material! Below is what one publisher says:

"One small but significant factor in keeping an editor's interest is the writer's attention to detail:
spelling, grammar, avoiding awkward repetitions, et cetera," says Griffith. "That's, of course, not to say
we would eliminate a work from consideration because of typos. But often the author who doesn't take
care with the small things isn't any more conscientious about the big ones. Sloppiness sends a
distressing message to editors — why should we spend the energy to read closely and meticulously
something that wasn't written that way? Given how steep the competition is — out of the 10,000
submissions we receive annually, we accept roughly 20 stories and 100 poems — it makes sense to do
everything you can to impress upon the editor that your work deserves scrutiny and can stand up to
it...Not many magazines and very few book publishers can afford to devote much time, energy, and
expertise to editing these days."

The Writers’ Café of Lafayette, IN, offers writers a range of manuscript editing
services, at reasonable prices. Whether this is your first novel or short story, a
term paper for university, or article for journal publication, all are welcome.

Most of the clients I provide services for come from referrals, but am always happy
to welcome new clients and we do specialize in assisting writers new to the  process.

The Writers’ Café offers a variety of services, but most of my experience includes
the editing, copy editing and/ or proofreading of:
A writer wants his/ her manuscript to
stand out because of the quality of the
material. More often that not, editors
aren't writers and writers aren't
editors...the writer does the hard work
(in my opinion) and I am here to make
sure all of your creative talent is
showcased in the best package
possible. For more on the "whys" of
editing, please see the introduction on
the
Services page.
The service that The Writers’
Café
offers are ideal for
writers new to the publishing
business--I do all the editing/
proofreading myself, I have
several years experience,
provide excellent quality, and
I am able to set my rates
lower than those of
companies who hire multiple
editors. Feedback from my
clients, past and present,
tells me that new authors
often are inhibited by the
potential costs of manuscript
editing;

While one’s hygienist’s
thorough attention to
detail is impressive
enough, your mastery of
the language allows for
the best suggestions I’
ve ever received. Thank
you for your work on
both my novel and
novella. We’ll be doing

I appreciate all the
constructive comments
on my work. Your
advice is always dead-
on, and there were a
few times I caught
myself slapping my
head at my own
mistakes. Thank you so
much for your help in
taking “The Storm” to
the next level

Thank you again for all
your hard work. I know
how frustrating this
editing can be, and
you've been an absolute
saint! You forced me to
go back and look at
things I'd skipped over
due to time constraints,
and my story is so much
better for it.

Thank you, thank you,
thank you!!
